Monongahela river barge

A barge to pick up and sort floating debris along the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh. With freedom to choose the program type, I began by looking how humans treated the river over time. Once as touch points for survival dating back to the Monongahela people and then for industry which caused its pollution; I sought to reverse the damage we have done and go back to treating the river with care like the first groups did.

It has two points of access, one for the public and one for those who work inside. The public has a dedicated bridge to enter and once inside can learn through classrooms and observation decks. On the lower level there is a debris sorter which and conveyor belt to pick up the debris which rely on methods of river clean and debris disposal. This barge is a source of education and works collaboratively with the communities of its docking site.

MAPPING STUDIES

To begin to figure out what part of the Monongahela to address via barge, time was taken to look at the river over time. Ecology, geography, economy where all taken into account to decide the program type and the nature of the barge.
